Visit The Intriguing 5 Rise Locks and 3 Rise Locks at Bingley
The 5 Rise Locks and the lesser know 3 Rise Locks are a great place to take a stroll whether on your own, with the family or friends or just taking your camera out to get a few great photos.
It's a great outdoor place to visit for everyone including the dog and It's one of those places you can make multiple visits to as the area looks different in the different seasons. Also consider a venture here at sunrise or sunset in winter for a different feel to the place compared to a busy Sunday afternoon on a warm summers day. (The first photo above with great reflections was taken 29th December at sunset)

Its often quiet and peaceful walking along the side of the Leeds Liverpool Canal except maybe on a warm sunny weekend or a Bank Holiday Monday when lots more people tend to venture out here. Spend an hour or two walking and relaxing along here and take in the calmness and serenity of it all, watch out for wildlife and birds, and take in the surrounding beauty of the area. Have a look at the locks both the 3 Rise and 5 Rise and see the difference in the height from bottom to top that the locks take the barges as they travel this stretch of canal and also take in the long distance views from the top of the 5 Rise Locks. The locks at at the edge of Bingley Centre so you can also combine your visit to the locks with a visit to Bingley, spend a few quid and support and it's small independent businesses. If you are looking for a more challenging walk, you can walk from the 5 Rise Locks along the canal all the way to Saltaire which is approximately 5 miles. Saltaire, a UNESCO World Heritage Site is another great place to see. And you can either walk back again or take the train from Saltaire or bus back to you car in Bingley near the 5 Rise Locks.
Facilities....
At the 5 Rise Lock there is a Cafe with indoor and outdoor seating and also has Toilet facilities. There are a number of rubbish bins in this area to use.
There are also a couple of public use benches here at the side of the canal and in fine weather it's a nice place to stop and have a picnic on the grass. There is no official visitor Cark Park but there is plenty roadside parking. (see below)
Parking...
There are a number of possible entry points to the canal depending on if you only want to visit the 5 Rise Locks or would like a stroll to take in the local area along the Leeds Liverpool canal and visit both 3 Rise Locks and 5 Rise Locks and other parts of the waterway.
Here are a couple of my preferred entry points.... Parking Point 1) For close access to 5 Rise Locks enter postcode BD16 4DR ( 1 Fairfax Road). When you reach the small roundabout you are here so please park responsibly on Fairfax Road or Falcon Road (not on yellow lines or over/blocking peoples driveways). Access is then down Beck Lane of the roundabout. Parking Point 2) Take a little scenic stroll down to the to the lock and park at BD16 2SP (Canal Road). There is some unofficial parking spaces at the edge of the canal towpath here or if these are full, there is on street parking available. (Please do not park on yellow lines or over/blocking peoples driveways).
How to Get Here....
If travelling by public transport try using this website to plan your route>>>
Arriving by Train to Bingley Station? "Follow How To Find It From" instructions from Parking Point 1 BUT in reverse !! Exit the train station to start at Bingley Main Street. Turn Right walk down until you reach the fire station where you walk across the metal bridge to the canal at 3 Rise Locks. Turn left onto the canal path to head up to 5 Rise Locks.
From Parking Point 1 From your vehicle walk back to the roundabout. Off the roundabout, take a short walk down Beck Lane and you will come out directly at the 5 Rise Lock and it's Cafe.
If you go over the canal bridge and turn left down the side of the locks and walk along the canal you'll find the 3 Rise Locks after an approximately 10 minutes stroll. You can then turn around and walk back the same route or exit the canal path here by going right over the large metal bridge and coming out at Bingley Fire Station which is on the edge of Bingley centre. If you turn left, after a 5 minute stroll, you're in Bingley center and can make a visit to the shops, cafes and bars in Bingley. Alternatively start your walk here by parking your vehicle here in one of the town car parks.
From Parking Point 2 From your vehicle, walk up Canal Road to the Leeds Liverpool Canal towpath. Turn right onto the pathway, this takes you past a boatyard and a large number of barges moored up on the other side of the canal and eventually to the 5 Rise Lock.
It will take approximately 10 minutes to stroll down to the 5 Rise Lock or approximately 20 minutes in total to stroll all the way along to the 3 Rise Locks. You then have 3 main options... Return using the same route, back to your vehicle. From 3 Rise Locks you also have the option to exit the canal path here to visit Bingley as explained in Parking Point 1. From the 5 Rise Lock you can exit through the gate off the canal path and go down here into a wooded area, turn right at the bottom of the slope and continue on, you then have an opportunity to re-join the canal path further on or take local streets to return to your vehicle. Parking Point 2 is my preferred parking location as it gives you a more interesting walk from parking your vehicle down to the locks.
These are only 2 points of many to access the Leeds Liverpool canal in this area. Also if you want a longer stroll or like a longer Hike you can venture further.... Saltaire in one direction and Skipton in the other.
Accessibility...
It's mostly a hard packed gravel surface which does result in some puddles and a little mud after heavy rains.
Canals by there nature run on a level surface so it's mostly flat except at the obvious Lock spots where there are steep climbs. For the most part, it's accessible by mobility scooter or wheelchair although its may be a bit bumpy over the gravel surface. I advise using parking point 1 for direct access to the 5 Rise Lock so you can then decide if you want to venture further along the canal.
And Finally...
Have fun, enjoy the walk, take photos, please be respectful to others and take your rubbish home.
